How to check if a backlink is live, and matches the deal
To check if a backlink is live, open the article the publisher sent, find your backlink in the body, and confirm it points to your exact page with the anchor and terms you agreed. A homepage, a social profile or a backlink to the wrong page doesn’t count, whatever the email says. Scout, our backlink bot, runs that check on every backlink once, before you’re invoiced, and a backlink specialist signs it off.
“It’s live!” Lovely. I’ll just take a quick look.
Why “it’s live” is where the check starts
A short, clear check between “it’s live” and payment is where the value is protected.
- A reply can point to a homepage or a profile instead of the article.
- A backlink can land on a section of your site rather than the page agreed.
- An agreed price is a promise; a live backlink is the result.
- Checking before payment keeps every fix quick and simple.
“It’s live!” is where the check starts
Run the three essential checks on three “It’s live!” emails and see which one goes on the invoice.
“It’s live!” Is it?

The real check runs up to 8 checks on the live page; these are the 3 essentials. Each backlink is checked once, before invoicing.
Three publishers say “It’s live!”. Run the check on each one.
See the answer
- healthtechnews.example/blog/intake-guide passes page, anchor and agreed terms, so it goes on the invoice.
- social.example/healthtechnews is a social profile, not the article. The deal stops.
- clinicpulse.example/news/forms has the wrong anchor. The deal stops until it’s fixed.

How to check if a backlink is live, in five steps
A backlink checker can take weeks to notice a new backlink. The page itself is the only proof that counts on the day.
We check each backlink on the live page once, before it goes on your invoice, and we don’t monitor it after that. Why that check decides what you pay is covered in pay only for live backlinks, and what you hear from us next is in our link building reports. The article itself is covered in guest post content writing, and every step sits in The LabsMedia Method.
Step 1: Open the exact page the publisher sent
It must be an article on their own site. A homepage, a social profile or a “please make it live” reply is not a placement.
Step 2: Find your backlink in the article body
Search the page for your domain. If you can’t see it, look in the page source; some sites load content with scripts after the page opens.
Step 3: Check it points to your exact page
The full address, not just your domain. A backlink to /solutions when you agreed /solutions/patient-intake is a different backlink.
Step 4: Check the anchor and the agreed terms
The anchor text should be the one you agreed, and the backlink’s attributes in the page source should match what the publisher confirmed.
Step 5: Record what you found, with the date
Keep the URL and a screenshot. If anything doesn’t match, tell the publisher what was expected and what was found before anyone is paid.
Three states, never blurred
An agreed price alone is not a closed deal. Every backlink sits in exactly one of these.
- LIVEConfirmed on the live page against what was agreed.
- AWAITING CHECKReported live by the publisher, not yet confirmed. Not counted as live.
- LOSTWas live once and has since gone. Kept on record, never quietly deleted.
How Scout checks every backlink on the live page
Every report is checked, a failure stops the deal, and a person gives the final yes.
Checked, not trusted
Never a guess
Fails closed
Proof first, payment second
The shape of the check, without the recipe.
- Up to 8checks on every live page
- 3must-pass essentials: page, anchor, agreed terms
- 1specialist sign-off on every live backlink
- Oncechecked, before invoicing, not monitored after
Two “it’s live” emails, one real backlink
A healthcare publisher agreed a backlink to /solutions/patient-intake. Here’s what happens when they report it.
Healthcare and medical blogs, DR 50–70, with the US as one of their top traffic countries.
First reply: the address of their social profile. That isn’t a placement on their own site, so it isn’t counted as live and nothing is checked against it.
Second reply: the article URL. The backlink is there, but it points at /solutions, not /solutions/patient-intake. The deal stops, and the publisher is told what was expected and what was found.
After the fix: right page, right anchor, agreed terms. A specialist signs off, and only then is the publisher asked to invoice.
The backlink goes on your invoice. Before that, you pay nothing for it.

Checking a backlink is live: common questions
Why doesn’t my new backlink show up in a backlink checker?
Backlink tools find new backlinks by crawling, and a new page can take days or weeks to be crawled. A missing entry doesn’t mean the backlink isn’t there. Check the page itself: open the article, search for your domain, and look in the page source if needed. The live page is the proof; the tool catches up later.
What should I do if the backlink points to the wrong page?
Tell the publisher exactly what you agreed and what you found, for example the full target address and the anchor, and ask them to fix it before you pay. Keep it factual and specific; a vague “something’s wrong” email stalls the deal. At LabsMedia a failed check stops the deal until the fix is confirmed.
Does LabsMedia keep checking backlinks after they go live?
No. Each backlink is checked once, on the live page against what was agreed, before it is invoiced. We don’t monitor it after that. If you want to follow your backlink profile over time, any backlink tool can track it, and the check before invoicing means you never pay for a backlink that wasn’t there.
Is a publisher’s “it’s live” email enough proof?
No. It is a report, not proof. Publishers reply “done” with a homepage, a social profile or an article where the backlink points somewhere else, usually by mistake. Treat every “it’s live” as the start of a check: the right page on their own site, your backlink in the body, your target page and your anchor.
What counts as a live backlink at LabsMedia?
A backlink found on the publisher’s own site, in the article, pointing to the page you agreed with the anchor and terms you agreed, and signed off by a LabsMedia backlink specialist. A backlink the publisher has reported but we haven’t confirmed is “awaiting check”, and it isn’t counted as live or invoiced.
